Established in 1855, John Leech Gallery is the earliest established Auckland art gallery. It continues to specialise in the sale of historical works and to develop its representation of contemporary New Zealand artists.
McGovern took up the challenge to represent this prestigious gallery and its dual focus online. John Leech Gallery is known for its quality, conservative, contemporary art. Less well known is the historical work. The directors wanted the site to help people discover these works by showcasing them, especially the vintage photography and Maori works.
The site architecture incorporates sections for both contemporary artists and heritage collections. Graphic objects are used to cross link specific items between sections, for example between a contemporary Maori artist and the Maori heritage section. In addition, "In the Showcase" features a regularly changing, work of significance selected by gallery director, John Gow.
